OLPC Mission, Part 2: The XO Laptop, design for learningWhy give a Laptop? See laptop.org and http Substitute the word Laptop, with the word Education, and you have much of the answer. XOs make it possible to collaborate, learn, teach, and publish at no cost. They inspire new forms of learning, and attention to education. And the provide access to digital texts in places too remote to send and update physical books in a cost-effective way.

Laptops are becoming as common as cell phones and there are so many brands on the market today. Trying to select the most feasible laptop really depends on personal choice and usage. If we look at the laptops on the market each extols their features.

However most have the same features in common. Processors, chipsets, size of hard disk drives, DVD players, wireless interface are found on all the laptops. Of course all the other standard features are also there. Like network ports, USB ports, serial port, etc.

Right now it’s the Intel Duo core processors that have taken the market by storm. But there are multiple features that a user wants from their laptop. Some want to use their laptop for gaming so want high speed processors. Others want to listen to music while they are working and want high quality speakers. Still others require high quality graphics. Students want laptops that are lightweight as they have to be carried all over the campus. Elderly people also want lightweight computers. Some people want widescreen laptops.

The individual requirements for laptops are so diverse that one single laptop cannot fulfill all the needs. Laptop manufacturers are busy in trying to add more features and make their laptops more versatile. Here it is not only the American laptop makers that are in stiff competition. There are laptop manufacturers world wide. All are trying to gain a sizeable niche in the world of laptops.

So when you are in the market for a laptop, first access your requirements. Is the weight of the laptop a consideration for you? Should the laptop be so tough that it can withstand falls or weights falling on them? What is the absolute essential size of hard disk you require? How fast should the processor speed be? How much battery time you require? After you have decided on what you are looking for then do a search for a suitable laptop.

Price will also be a major consideration and you want your laptop to work for a long time. Also the type of warranties that are offered by laptop makers has to be taken into account. Some people want international warranties as they do a lot of traveling. You may change your cell phone after every couple of months but not your laptop. Your laptop is going to be around for a long time.

Laptops have become the life support systems for a number of people globally. Journalists, business executives, students, and many other people have now become totally dependent on their laptops. So buying a feasible laptop is a big decision. What you want is a laptop that suits your needs, gives you the battery time you want and is not a burden to carry around.

Finding a suitable and feasible laptop is not difficult once you know what you need. Do some research; look at reviews on the different brands and models available. This little homework will help to narrow down your choices. Then you should be able to find a suitable laptop that will meet your current and future requirements.

What laptop is light-weight, has good battery life, good looks and is recommended for home-use purposes?
I will be utilizing the laptop primarily for browsing the web, chatting, etc.
I will also be playing MS Flight Sim.

What are the recommended minimum specifications, in terms of:
1. Memory
2. Hard Drive
3. Screen Size

However, weight and battery life would be the deciding factors.

Is it true that HP makes the best laptops? How are the HP Mini Series and Pavilion DV2?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks

I’m afraid you can’t at this time. There was a “give one get one program” but it ended in December.

Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing an initiative to introduce digital textbooks into schools. It will move Californias education system into the 21st century. But there is no mention in the CDTI about providing devices for reading the texts. Does it mean that students will need to have their own computers? Not every student has. Is the XO laptop cheap enough to give all students? What about a cooperation between OLPC and CDTI. Internet is a great treasure chest for learning!
